Repairing Rangefinder Prism Alignment and Disassembling Focus Helicoid

Over decades of field use, mechanical vibration and aged lubricant degradation can cause rangefinder coincidence patches to split horizontally or drift at infinity. Restoring optical alignment and smooth focus ring torque requires methodical disassembly using precision watchmaker tools.

1. Horizontal & Vertical Rangefinder Adjustment

Target a distinct vertical object located at a calibrated distance (or true optical infinity at >3km). Using micro-screwdrivers, adjust the rangefinder roller pivot set-screw inside the camera body throat. Fine-tune until the secondary yellow patch merges seamlessly into a single image.

2. Degreasing & Relubricating Focus Helicoids

Sticky or gritty manual focus rings stem from brass helicoid grease hardening over time. Carefully mark matching helicoid entry threads before separating the inner and outer barrels. Clean thoroughly using isopropyl alcohol (IPA 99%), then reapply synthetic Helimax optical damping grease for smooth, consistent rotation.
