Rollei 35 S: Ultra-Compact Engineering Marvel
By Scenewonderstack Technical Vault Curators
Designed by Heinz Waaske and unveiled in 1966, the Rollei 35 series set the benchmark for ultra-compact full-frame 35mm cameras. The 35 S variant incorporates a multi-coated 5-element Sonnar 40mm f/2.8 lens engineered by Carl Zeiss.
Micro-Mechanical Architecture
To fit a 24x36mm frame into a pocket-sized body, Waaske arranged controls uniquely: aperture and shutter dials sit on the front face, the flash shoe is inverted on the bottom plate, and the lens barrel collapses mechanically into the body when wound.
